A switch-type decomposable paper pot is in development

The manufacturer of the Chainpot, Nippon Beet Sugar Manufacturing Co., Ltd., has announced what it describes as a world-first switch-type decomposable paper pot.

The Chainpot is deliberately strong so it can protect roots through raising and transplanting, which also means it does not break down quickly in the soil. The new paper aims to resolve that trade-off: citric-acid crosslinking keeps the pot strong before planting, while an alkaline-water treatment promotes breakdown in the soil afterwards.

It is currently being developed toward a commercial product, and details such as suitable crops have not yet been published. We will share more as it becomes available.
